Tennessee senior Baylen Buchanan, who started every game last season at nickel back, is out indefinitely because of concerns about his spine.
“Baylen had a couple of issues during the offseason, and basically, we discovered that he has kind of a narrowing of the spine,” coach Jeremy Pruitt said at a press conference after Tuesday’s practice.
“So, for his safety and precaution, we’re holding him out. We’ve sent him to a lot of specialists across the country and just kind of waiting and gathering information.”
Buchanan, the son of former NFL Pro Bowl defensive back Ray Buchanan, made 49 tackles last season, including three for loss, and broke up four passes.
He has a redshirt available.
“One thing you have to figure out, is this something he’s had the whole time that he’s played, or is this something that kind of happened right now,” Pruitt said. “Precautionary, we’ve held him out and we’re going to continue to do that because his safety is our first priority.”
