Arizona State names true freshman Daniels starting QB

Arizona State coach Herm Edwards announced Monday that true freshman quarterback Jayden Daniels will be the team’s starting quarterback this fall.

Daniels is set to become the first true freshman quarterback to start a season opener for the Sun Devils in school history.

He beat out junior Dillon Sterling-Cole and fellow true freshmen Joey Yellen and Ethan Long for the job.

Yellen currently holds the second spot on the depth chart. Sterling-Cole served as the backup to Manny Wilkins last season.

Daniels was the Class of 2019’s No. 2 ranked duel-threat quarterback in the country while playing for Cajon High School in San Bernardino, Calif., according to ESPN. He holds California high school Southern Section record for passing yards with 14,007.

Wilkins is currently in camp with the Green Bay Packers after throwing for 3,025 yards and 20 touchdowns last season as a Sun Devils senior. The previous year, he threw for 3,270 yards and 20 TDs.

Arizona State opens the season against Kent State on Aug. 29 in Tempe.
