COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The No. 11-ranked Lady Vols fell in the quarterfinals of the SEC Tournament as No. 24 Auburn held on to win, 2-0, on Thursday night.
In the contest, five Lady Vols recorded hits with senior Aubrey Leach going 1-for-2 in the leadoff spot.
Junior Caylan Arnold got the start and threw 6.0 innings, allowing just two runs (one earned) on six hits in the loss. She struck out five Tigers in the contest and 59 of her 92 pitches were strikes. Senior Matty Moss entered the game in the seventh and threw 1.0 shutout inning. Five of her nine pitches were strikes.
To start the game, the two teams traded a scoreless opening frame before Auburn plated the first run of the contest on two hits in the second inning
Tennessee threatened in the bottom of the second and third stanzas with Lady Vols in scoring position, but groundouts back to AU’s pitcher stranded runners each time.
Extending their lead in the fifth, the Tigers used one hit and took advantage of a defensive miscue by UT to score one run. Camryn Greenwood reached on a fielding error by Ashley Morgan and then scored on an RBI single to right field, making it a 2-0 game.
The Lady Vols looked to start a rally in the bottom of the fifth as they put runners on base. Morgan led off with a double before Treasuary Poindexter was brought in to pinch run. Two batters later, Leach singled to first. Poindexter then attempted to score on the play but was called out at home.
Tennessee made solid contact with the ball in the sixth and seventh innings but to no avail as Auburn’s players were in position to the make outs.
Overall, the two squads combined for just 11 hits and left 11 batters on base in the pitchers’ duel.
