KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – The No. 11/12 Lady Vols clinched the series vs. Texas A&M, 4-2, with a four-run sixth inning on Senior Day after a weather delay pushed Saturday’s first pitch back by almost two hours.
With the win, UT (39-12, 14-9 SEC) has won five of its seven SEC series. The Orange and White will look to secure the sweep tomorrow in the series finale.
Tennessee’s five available seniors earned starting nods today as Matty Moss and Katie Weimer formed the battery, Savannah Huffstetler played second base, Aubrey Leach earned the start at shortstop and Haley Bearden began the contest in right field.
Moss threw 4.0 innings in the start, allowing two runs, one earned, on one hit while striking out a pair of Aggies. The Lady Vols turned to Ashley Rogers in the fifth and the freshman went on to throw 3.0 shutout innings and four strikeouts to pick up the win. She is now 20-4 on the season.
After two silent frames from both teams, the Aggies struck first in the contest on a Kelly Martinez home run in the third to take a 1-0 lead.
Texas A&M added to its lead in the fifth, scoring one run on one hit. A leadoff walk put Riley Sartain on before an error by Tennessee’s second baseman allowed her to move into scoring position. Kelbi Fortenberry’s RBI-single to center then scratched the run across, making it a 2-0 game.
In its next two turns at the plate, Tennessee moved runners into scoring position but struggled to get the bats going.
It wasn’t until the sixth inning that the Lady Vols exploded for four runs on three hits and two errors to take the lead. Leach and Jenna Holcomb notched back-to-back hits to lead off and a fielding error by Texas A&M’s center fielder allowed Leach to score. Seggern then sent the first pitch of her at-bat soaring over the center-field wall to plate the go-ahead run on a two-run bomb. Two batters later, Morgan was hit by a pitch and Treasuary Poindexter was brought in to pinch run. The Covington, Tenn., native moved to second on an error and then scored on Phillips’ RBI-single lined to center, giving UT the 4-2 advantage.
In the seventh inning, the Aggies’ Abby Smith hit a two-bagger to center with one out before Rogers shut the door, throwing back-to-back strikeouts to end the game.
