List and analysis of 34 VFLs in NFL, plus free agents and local players entering minicamps

Kyle Phillips (5) / Credit: College Press Box & NFL Communications

Here’s a complete list of University of Tennessee players in the National Football League following the 2019 NFL Draft and leading into the start of rookie minicamps.

I’ve included some notes, jersey numbers, depth chart positions, camp dates and my view of the position battles of each of the VFLs in the NFL. You will also see the list of players with local ties to the Knoxville area or didn’t end their college careers at UT.

I’ll update this list throughout the year here on my blog “Vince’s View.” Bookmark my blog page and check back often.

Tennessee Vols NFL Notes
-Currently 34 U. of Tennessee players on NFL teams
-5 VFL rookies are in the NFL right now (none are draft picks)
-Pittsburgh has the most UT players with 4
-DB is the largest position of VFLs in the league right now with 6
-21 of the 32 teams have a UT player

Tennessee Volunteers On NFL Teams as of 5/2/19 (34) x = rookie
Atlanta Falcons
Luke Stocker (80) TE (2nd team TE)
Vince’s View: The first-year Falcons TE, Stocker, gives Atlanta an outstanding blocking option. Starter Austin Hooper is an excellent pass catcher. The two could be on the field together some as well, but with the depth at WR for Atlanta, Stocker is likely to be a situational piece in the offense.
Rookie Minicamp: May 10-12
OTA Offseason Workouts: May 20-21, May 23, May 29-31, June 3-4, June 6
Mandatory Minicamp: June 11-13

Baltimore Ravens
Morgan Cox (46) LS (starting LS)
Vince’s View: Cox is so solid and never has any competition. That continues this season.
Rookie Minicamp: May 3-5
OTA Offseason Workouts: May 20-21, May 23, May 28, May 30-31, June 3-4, June 6-7
Mandatory Minicamp: June 11-13

Buffalo Bills
Jason Croom (80) TE (2nd team TE)
Vince’s View: Croom is in a battle to make the team. He’s the only returning TE in a room that’s been completely made over. Tyler Kroft is the likely starter who came over from the Bengals. Plus, the Bills spent two draft picks on TEs, Dawson Knox (3rd Rd) and Tommy Sweeney (7th Rd.)
Rookie Minicamp: May 10-12
OTA Offseason Workouts: May 20-21, May 23, May 28-29, May 31 June 3-4, June 6-7
Mandatory Minicamp: June 11-13

Carolina Panthers
Michael Palardy (5) P (starting P/H)
Rashaan Gaulden (28) DB (starting FS)
Vince’s View: Gaulden is in competition primarily with former Titans DB Da’Norris Searcy for the starting FS spot. Both can play multiple DB positions. The opportunity is there for the 2nd year NFL Vol.
Rookie Minicamp: May 10-12
OTA Offseason Workouts: May 21-23, May 28-30, June 3-6
Mandatory Minicamp: June 11-13

Chicago Bears
Tyler Bray (9) QB (3rd team QB)
Cordarrelle Patterson (–) WR/KR (2nd team WR & starting KR)
Vince’s View: Bray has often been inactive, but he’s an experienced 3rd QB with arm talent, so he’s likely to hold on to that role. He’s spent most of his career behind Chase Daniel in both KC and Chicago. Patterson joins the Bears after winning the Super Bowl with the Patriots. He gives Matt Nagy another play-making piece in that offense. CP is expected to be the 3rd or 4th receiver and the primary kick returner. Oh, how about the dynamic of former UT pass-catching combo QB Tyler Bray and WR Cordarrelle Patterson doing it with the Bears, albeit mostly in practice. Patterson caught 46 passes for 778 yards and 5 TDs for UT from Bray.
Rookie Minicamp: May 3-5
OTA Offseason Workouts: May 21-23, May 29-31, June 4-7
Mandatory Minicamp: June 11-13

Cincinnati Bengals
Josh Malone (80) WR (2nd team WR)
Vince’s View: It’ll be interesting to see how much the new coaching staff likes Malone, who has seen limited duty as a reserve WR. He’s in the competition for the 3rd or 4th spot behind AJ Green and Tyler Boyd. The Bengals have 10 WRs on the roster, plus some undrafted free agents.
Rookie Minicamp: May 10-12
OTA Offseason Workouts: May 20-21, May 23, May 28-30, June 3-6
Mandatory Minicamp: June 11-13

Cleveland Browns
Britton Colquitt (4) P (starting P/H)
Vince’s View: The VFL gets to be coached by Jeremy Pruitt’s best friend, Freddie Kitchens, now the head coach of the Browns.
Rookie Minicamp: May 3-5
OTA Offseason Workouts: May 14-16, May 21-23, May 28-31
Mandatory Minicamp: June 4-6

Dallas Cowboys
Jason Witten (82) TE (starting TE)
Vince’s View: It is really weird to re-list Witten among the VFLs in the NFL and see him on the depth chart. Witten will no doubt bring great leadership back to the team. We’ll find out this offseason more about what kind of shape he’s in and if he appears to have lost a step or maybe looks fresh having rested his body for more than a year.
Rookie Minicamp: May 10-12
OTA Offseason Workouts: May 21-23, May 28-30, June 3-6
Mandatory Minicamp: June 11-13

Denver Broncos
Alexander “AJ” Johnson (45) LB (3rd team ILB)
Ja’Wuan James (70) OT (starting RT)
Vince’s View: James will have something other than a dolphin on his helmet for the first time in his NFL career, after spending the first six seasons with Miami. James was a high-priced free agent signing for Denver, who has revamped its struggling o-line. James will likely line-up next to second round draft pick Dalton Risner, who is expected to be the right guard. Johnson has not been able to move-up the depth chart at either of the inside linebacker spots as of yet. That group, led by Todd Davis and Josey Jewell, is not exactly a who’s who of LBs. That’s actually one of the weakest spots on the team in my opinion. Is Johnson capable and willing to take his talents to new heights at the highest level? We’ll see.
Rookie Minicamp: May 10-12
OTA Offseason Workouts: May 13-14, May 16, May 20-21, May 23, May 29-31
Mandatory Minicamp: June 4-6

Detroit Lions
Jalen Reeves-Maybin (44) LB (2nd team OLB)
Justin Coleman (27) DB (starting RCB)
Vince’s View: Coleman cashed in on his success with the Seahawks by signing a healthy free agent deal in Detroit. Coleman will start outside at corner and some at nickel back as well. The Lions are banking on Coleman, Darius Slay and former Gator Teez Tabor to give them the best group of CBs they’ve had in a long time. Reeves-Maybin has been a solid back-up, recording 43 tackles his first two seasons (23 GPs.) He’s slotted behind Christian Jones at the WLB position, just waiting for his name to be called while contributing on special teams.
Rookie Minicamp: May 10-12
OTA Offseason Workouts: May 20-21, May 23, May 29-31, June 10-13
Mandatory Minicamp: June 4-6

Houston Texans
Zach Fulton (73) OL (starting RG)
Trevor Daniel (8) P (starting P/H)
Vince’s View: Daniel won the punting job as an undrafted rookie free agent. He had a very nice rookie year. Fulton is locked in at RG with really no competition
Rookie Minicamp: May 10-12
OTA Offseason Workouts: May 20-21, May 23, May 28-30, June 3-4, June 6-7
Mandatory Minicamp: June 11-13

Kansas City Chiefs
Dustin Colquitt (2) P (starting P/H)
Kahlil McKenzie (66) OG (2nd team LG)
Justin Martin (–) DB (4th team CB)-x
Vince’s View: McKenzie did not play his rookie season, but he was often active as a reserve interior lineman. Part of the success the Chiefs enjoyed last season was the offensive line playing well and staying healthy. He’ll start out backing up Cameron Erving at LG. Erving is one of three OL starters that are former Cleveland Browns. 37-year Dustin Colquitt is one of the oldest players in the league, but he continues to get the job done as the Chiefs punter. Following his stint in the AAF, Martin is getting a tryout with a team that doesn’t have a lot of big name, high draft pick corners among the back-ups. Still looks like a long shot.
Rookie Minicamp: May 4-6
OTA Offseason Workouts: May 21-23, May 28-30, June 4-7
Mandatory Minicamp: June 11-13

Los Angeles Rams
John Kelly (42) RB (5th team RB)
Vince’s View: The likeable, hard-running second-year pro Kelly is in a battle for a roster spot. The former 6th-round pick is behind older undrafted free agent RBs Malcolm Brown and Justin Davis. The Rams used a 3rd-round pick on Memphis RB Darrell Henderson to give them a home run hitting option and possibly some extra protection should Todd Gurley’s arthritis in his knee continue to slow him down. The Rams love Henderson, who they call a “two scooter” because you scoot your chair up a little because he’s so much fun to watch him. Last year, the Rams acquired CJ Anderson when Gurley and Malcolm Brown were hurt. Will they feel good enough about the existing group this year, if that happens again, and will that include Kelly? Do they carry an extra RB just in case Gurley gets hurt? These workout dates below will be pretty important for Kelly. He’ll need to get better, impress and stay healthy. The talent is there to stick..
Rookie Minicamp: May 10
OTA Offseason Workouts: May 20-21, May 23, May 28-30, June 3-6
Mandatory Minicamp: June 11-13

Minnesota Vikings
Micah Abernathy (–) DB (4th team SS)-x
Vince’s View: Abernathy is also a long shot to make it in this spot. The Vikings secondary, other than Knoxville’s Harrison Smith, has had its inconsistencies. Minnesota has invested a lot in it’s secondary in recent years. The DB room has 9 of their own draft picks on the roster including 3 first round CBs. That means they will give those guys every opportunity to pan out. There are a ton of bodies ahead of Abernathy (UDFA.)
Rookie Minicamp: May 3-5
OTA Offseason Workouts: May 21-23, May 28-30, June 3-6
Mandatory Minicamp: June 11-13

New England Patriots
Jacob Johnson (–) FB (4th team TE/2nd team FB)-x
Vince’s View: Johnson was signed recently by the Patriots from the German Professional Football League. He will compete in the same FB/HB/TE/ST role he was in at the end of his UT career. He’ll backup James Develin in that spot. I’m not sure if he can unseat Develin, but with “The Hoodie,” you never know.
Rookie Minicamp: May 10-12
OTA Offseason Workouts: May 20-21, May 23, May 29-30, June 10-11
Mandatory Minicamp: June 4-6

New Orleans Saints
Alvin Kamara (41) RB (starting RB/starting PR)
Shy Tuttle (–) DT (3rd team DT)-x
Vince’s View: Kamara loses his bff in Mark Ingram, who signed with the Ravens. Now, Latavius Murray will be the tandem back with AK41. I think Murray is a drop-off from Ingram. Unless another back emerges, they may need to lean on Kamara even more this year. Tuttle is in an excellent spot as an undrafted free agent. NO is a great organization, no team gives undrafted free agents more opportunities (10 on the roster prior to signings after this year’s draft) and there’s not much depth at the two DT positions. He may not make the team, but if he impresses, I think he could earn a practice squad spot to have in-house depth.
Rookie Minicamp: May 10-12
OTA Offseason Workouts: May 21-23, May 28-30, June 3-6
Mandatory Minicamp: June 11-13

New York Jets
Kyle Phillips (–) DE (4th team DE)-x
Vince’s View: Phillips’ one year in Jeremy Pruitt’s 3-4 defense will serve him well in his attempt to make the Jets team or practice squad. Phillips has the versatility to play either DE position and he can slide inside to DT in pass rushing situations. Like his former UT d-line mate Shy Tuttle in New Orleans, there aren’t huge numbers in front of Phillips in New York. He will compete with mid 20s young vets Nathan Shepherd, Charles Tapper and Brandon Kaufusi for reserve DE positions behind starters Leonard Williams and Henry Anderson.
Rookie Minicamp: May 10-12
OTA Offseason Workouts: May 21-23, May 28-30, June 10-13
Mandatory Minicamp: June 4-6

Philadelphia Eagles
Derek Barnett (96) DE (starting RDE)
Malik Jackson (–) DT (starting RDT)
Vince’s View: After a 5 sack and 17 tackle rookie season that ended in a Super Bowl title, Barnett’s 2nd season ended before the midway point of the season. He started 6 games in 2018 recording 2.5 sacks and 15 tackles, but was then shut down with season-ending shoulder surgery. The Eagles and their fans are going to expect Barnett to play like the 1st round pick he showed flashes of as a rookie. He’ll line-up alongside veteran VFL in the NFL DT Malik Jackson. Jackson lost his starting spot midway through the year last season in Jacksonville. He’ll compete with Tim Jernigan and others to be the 2nd DT with all-pro Fletcher Cox. If the two VFLs have bounce back years, the Eagles could have one of the best defensive lines in the NFL.
Rookie Minicamp: May 10-12
OTA Offseason Workouts: May 21-23, May 28, May 30-31, June 3-6
Mandatory Minicamp: June 11-13

Pittsburgh Steelers
Ramon Foster (73) OG (starting LG)
Daniel McCullers (93) NT (2nd team NT)
Cameron Sutton (20) DB (3rd team CB/2nd team PR)
Joshua Dobbs (5) QB (2nd team QB)
Vince’s View: Foster has been talked about more from being the voice of the locker room, but the 33-year old is still playing well. Dobbs will look to hold-off Mason Rudolph as the back-up QB. McCullers has continued to hold on to his role as a reserve DT. Sutton has seen the competition for playing time get tougher as the Steelers signed Steven Nelson from KC as the likely starter at CB opposite Joe Haden, as well as drafting Justin Layne in the 3rd round. There are 11 CBs in camp not counting undrafted free agents.
Rookie Minicamp: May 10-12
OTA Offseason Workouts: May 21-23, May 28-30, June 3-6
Mandatory Minicamp: June 11-13

San Francisco 49ers
Emmanuel Moseley (41) CB (4th team CB)
Vince’s View: Moseley made his NFL debut vs. Raiders in week 9, but it was halted quickly when he dislocated his shoulder making a special teams tackle, ending his rookie season. The former two-star recruit to the University of Tennessee will have to compete against 7 other cornerbacks including newly acquired Jason Verrett from the Chargers and veteran Richard Sherman.
Rookie Minicamp: May 3-5
OTA Offseason Workouts: May 20-21, May 23, May 28-29, May 31, June 3-4, June 6
Mandatory Minicamp: June 11-13

Tennessee Titans
LaTroy Lewis (45) LB (2nd team OLB)
Quart’e Sapp (–) LB (4th team OLB)-x
Vince’s View: LaTroy Lewis will look to hold off 5th round draft pick D’Andre Walker out of Georgia and VFL rookie UDFA Quart’e Sapp. Sapp decided to skip his final year of eligibility to pursue his NFL dream. He gets that shot in Nashville. With Cameron Wake, Harold Landry and Kamalei Correa the competition is tough for both of them to stick with the Titans.
Rookie Minicamp: May 10-12
OTA Offseason Workouts: May 20-21, May 23, May 28, May 30-31, June 3-6
