Softball Preview: #9/8 UT vs. –/RV Mississippi State

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — No. 9/8 Tennessee (29-8, 7-5 SEC) opens its portion of All Vol Weekend on Friday as the Lady Vols welcome Mississippi State to Sherri Parker Lee Stadium for a three-game series on April 12-14.

UT is coming off a 1-2 weekend after having taken Game 3 vs. Auburn on Sunday. So far this season, the Orange and White have won three of their four SEC series.

Prior to the Orange and White Spring Game on Saturday, free shuttles will be available for the parking area located off Stephenson Drive at 4 p.m. The shuttle will drop off and pick-up after the game at the corner of Chamique Holdsclaw Dr. and Lake Loudon Blvd. Fans needing access to ADA shuttles should move their vehicles to park on the UT Ag Campus for transport to Gate 21.

Need to Know

  • Tennessee’s .324 batting average ranks third in the SEC and 15th in the nation while the squad’s .982 fielding percentage is second and third, respectively.
  • The Lady Vols have 12 wins over opponents who were ranked or received votes in the USA Today/NFCA Coaches Poll and //ESPN.com/USA Softball Poll entering the weekend.
  • UT is outscoring opponents 235-78 through the two-thirds of the season. The Lady Vols have thrown nine shutouts total and have run-ruled opponents 13 times.
  • Junior Jenna Holcomb led Tennessee offensively last week, posting a .500 average (4-for-8) with one run scored and a double. She boasted a team-best .500 on-base percentage in the Auburn series.
  • Both Kaili Phillips and Ashley Morgan drove three runs in while hitting .333 over the weekend.
  • Aubrey Leach is 12 runs shy of breaking Tennessee’s career record of 244 runs scored. She currently has 233 runs scored through 217 games. She also sits in third place in career walks with 146, just eight walks shy of the program record (154).

MISSISSIPPI STATE

  • Now in her eighth season, Bulldogs’ head coach Vann Stuedeman has led the squad to six NCAA Tournament appearances and 33 or more wins in six campaigns. In 2018, MSU went 38-23 (7-17) and advanced to the Tucson Regional.
  • Mississippi State dropped the weekend series to LSU but bounced back in a midweek matchup against Memphis, breaking three program records in the five-inning win. The Bulldogs set a single-game record with five home runs, Fa Leilua broke State’s junior home run record and sophomore Mia Davidson broke her own Mississippi State single-season record, hitting her 20th homer of the season.
  • Davidson leads the squad with a .455 average, 39 runs, 51 hits, 50 RBI, 20 home runs and seven doubles. Overall, five players are hitting .321 or higher.
  • In the circle, Emily Williams leads the staff with a 2.54 ERA and 8-4 record through 88.1 innings of work. Opposing batters are hitting .201 off the right-hander
