GAINESVILLE, Fla. – No. 7 Tennessee dropped the final game of the series to No. 4 Florida, 8-0, at Katie Seashole Pressly Stadium on Sunday.
The Lady Vols picked up dominant wins in the first two games of the weekend, outscoring the Gators 12-1 while hitting seven home runs to take the series. With the victories, UT claimed its first series in Gainesville since 2006 when the then-No. 1 Lady Vols won Games 1 and 3.
After chasing UF’s Kelly Barnhill from the circle on Friday, Tennessee (18-3, 2-1 SEC) struggled to get into an offensive rhythm while facing the senior pitcher in the series finale.
Barnhill recorded 10 strikeouts in the opening four frames before Shipman doubled to left field to give the Lady Vols their first hit of the contest. She was left stranded as two more strikeouts were recorded to end the threat.
In the top of the sixth, Leach singled to center with one out and then advanced to second on a groundout to the right side, but a ball caught in foul territory by Florida’s third baseman preserved the shutout.
Florida (22-4, 1-2 SEC) scored seven of their eight runs on homers off the bats of Kendyl Lindaman and Amanda Lorenz.
Lindaman hit a two-run long ball to left field in the third inning to give the Gators a 2-0 lead. Lorenz then knocked a two-run shot in the fourth and a three-run blast in the sixth to extend UF’s advantage to 7-0.
A double by Adam’s in the sixth plated the eighth and final run of the game as the run rule came into play.
Right-handed pitcher Caylan Arnold was charged with the loss after allowing two runs on three hits in 3.0 innings of work. She is 7-2 on the season.
ON DECK: The Lady Vols head to Columbia, Tenn., on Tuesday to face Middle Tennessee in the Mid-State Classic. The contest is set for 7 p.m. ET.
