BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Tennessee softball was chosen to finish third in the Southeastern Conference Preseason Coaches’ Poll, as announced by the league office on Wednesday.
The poll was voted on by the head coaches of the league’s 13 softball-playing institutions and points were awarded on a 1-2-3-4-5-6-7-8-9-10-11-12 basis. Coaches were not allowed to vote for their own team.
The Lady Vols were picked second in last season’s preseason poll before earning the No. 4 seed in the SEC Tournament. Overall in 2018, Tennessee notched a 48-14 record which saw the program reach their 15th consecutive NCAA Regional and their 10th overall Super Regional.
UT returns three players who earned SEC postseason honors a year ago and also brings back six of its top 10 hitters from 2018.
The Big Orange begins its season at the Kickin’ Chicken Classic in Myrtle Beach, S.C., on Feb. 8 and kicks off its home slate with the Tennessee Classic on Feb. 22 against Kansas.
Florida, the defending SEC Champion, was tabbed to win the league for the sixth straight season. The Gators received 10 of the possible 13 first-place votes. Also receiving first-place votes were Georgia (two) and Kentucky (one).
