It’s not the be-all-end-all, but I thought it would be interesting to compare the Tennessee Volunteers football team in 2018 (5-7) with the 2017 team (4-8) now that the season has concluded.

Tennessee’s defense allowed opposing quarterbacks to complete 63% of their passes this season. That was the worst in school history. That is based on UT’s record book that reflects stats going back to 1950.

UT’s 192 first downs on offense was the fewest since 2008.

The 21 passing touchdowns the defense allowed was the most by the Vols since 2012.

Another interesting aspect of some of the numbers is that UT was only marginally better in many areas compared to 2017 where they struggled mightily. Two exceptions were the rush defense improving by 94 yards per game and in all areas of run defense, as well as TD% in redzone offense improving from a dismal 54% to 65%. They also didn’t create many more opportunities than in 2017.

Do what you want with the numbers, but here they are below.
