Kerbyson: Tennessee Is Out of the Running for Cade Mays

Don’t expect offensive lineman Cade Mays from Knoxville Catholic High School to sign with Tennessee next week.

Mays, who originally committed to the Vols before earlier this fall, announced a top three of Clemson, Georgia and Ohio State following Catholic’s win in the Class 5A state championship game on Nov. 30.

Since then, Tennessee has hired Phillip Fulmer as athletic director and Jeremy Pruitt as head coach.

Fulmer and Pruitt, along with offensive line coach Will Friend, visited Catholic High School on Wednesday with the hopes of convincing Mays to reconsider the Vols before next week’s early signing period, which will take place from Dec. 20-22.

Kyler Kerbyson, who played on the offensive line at both Catholic and Tennessee, told “The First Quarter” on Thursday that he doesn’t expect Mays to sign with Tennessee.

Here is Kerbyson’s full comment (with audio below):

“I talk to Cade on a daily basis. He comes and works out at D1 (Sports Training in Knoxville), where I work, and he also does O-line training with me. He had that meeting with (Tennessee’s coaches) and he just told them, ‘Look Coach, I don’t know you enough to flip back.’ He’s going to stick to his top three, which is Clemson, Georgia and Ohio State, and we’ll see how that plays out. He wanted to go here originally, and I’m sure that had to do with proximity to home, what was going on, he’s a legacy guy, his dad went here. But I think the whole scenario that has gone on has really deterred him away from it. I feel like it would a lot of people — just not knowing. How are you supposed to make a decision like this and not know how it’s going to turn out for you?”

Tennessee’s new staff has made plenty of effort to convince Mays to stay in Knoxville, but his preference appears to be elsewhere.

Mays’s decision will likely come down to Clemson, which visited Mays on Wednesday, and Georgia, where Mays is expected to visit this weekend.
